A beautiful antique Venetian Murano oval Millefiori ‘peacock eye’ beads, garnet glass and French jet beads necklace. The millefiori beads are really unusual with their deep sea green/blue background, and with the yellow, blue, white and red millefiori, they look just like peacock eyes from a distance. The red glass beads are moulded and hand faceted – they look just like garnets, especially when they catch the light, they sparkle beautifully. With the three different types of beads, including the long French jet beads, this makes a wonderful and unique combination. The string is natural coloured, it also provides an attractive contrast to the beads.
The necklace is hand-knotted, on the original string, which still seems good and strong, but has stretched a little over time. You just can’t beat a hand-knotted necklace for strength and durability and this has certainly stood the test of time. Several of the beads have surface wear, and the odd small chip, which is to be expected with old beads and is commensurate with age and use. One of the long French jet beads had a clean break close to the hole. This has been glued back together and is extremely hard to spot, unless scrutinising with a jeweller’s loupe (please see penultimate photo). The necklace is still in lovely condition for 100, or more, years old. It fastens with the original bolt ring clasp and is a nice length – not too long and not too short.
