A beautiful and understated antique mother of pearl beads necklace, gently graduating in size. The hand-carved beads have a lovely chalky matt quality to them.
The original cat gut thread unfortunately broke as I was photographing the necklace – which just shows how delicate these old necklaces can be. All the original beads have therefore just been professionally re-threaded, with the addition of antique lustre spacer beads. I think you will agree that it looks even more beautiful with this minor addition, which only enhances the look of the piece and the way it hangs (please see penultimate photo of how it was before rethreading).
The clasp is sterling silver, which is unmarked but has been tested. It is not unusual for a piece of this age not to be stamped. It is one of the earliest of the spring ring clasps and is still working well. The necklace is long enough to go over the head without undoing the clasp, making it very easy to wear.
There are some very minor natural imperfections to the mother of pearl, but nothing which detracts in any way from the immense charm of this piece.
