RARE Vintage MITZI LORENZ Ocelot/Geoffroy’s Fur Hat Tam O’Shanter Beret. London, Made in England. Special Occasion. Collector.
Circa 1940’s – 50’s
A fabulous original vintage real fur hat, by highly sought after Designer Mitzi Lorenz. The style is Tam O’Shanter – higher at the front, and there is a gorgeous leather rosette embellishment. The fur is in very good condition, with no holes or losses. The hat is fully lined with satin. The lining has some light marks commensurate with age (please see final picture). This doesn’t in any way detract from its immense charm and it is perfectly wearable as it is. The label reads ‘Mitzi Lorenz Model, London W1, Made in England’.
Mitzi Lorenz was born in Austria in 1911. As a young girl she knew that millinery was her passion, and at the tender age of 15 she apprenticed at a Viennese fashion house. She and her husband came to England and set up shop on Great Portland Street, in London’s west end in 1938. The business flourished and she fast became a hat making legend. Her hat ‘models’ are at the highest end and have always been highly sought after.
*Please note that the hat is pre-CITES and Ocelot/Geoffroy’s was not an endangered species at the time it was made, around 80 years ago. Currently Geoffroy’s Ocelot is classed as being of ‘Least Concern’ by the IUCN (International Union for Conservation of Nature).
