A Really UNUSUAL and Very RARE Piece!
Antique Art Deco Egyptian Revival carved celluloid, pressed glass, horn and Rudraksha prayer beads chunky necklace. The two long beads at the front are made from celluloid, carved in an Egyptian design. There is crackling on the surface of these beads commensurate with age. The central bead is made from carved horn. There are three Rudraksha on either side and then the rectangular beads are again made from celluloid and carved with an Egyptian design. The beige patterned beads closer to the clasp are made from poured glass and remind me very much of the Neiger Brothers beads.
The necklace fastens with a screw barrel clasp, but may be long enough to go over the head without undoing the clasp (depending on head size). It is threaded on the original cat gut thread, which still seems strong.
There have been many Egyptian Revivals, but probably the most notable was in the 1920’s when King Tutankhamun’s tomb was discovered by Howard Carter in 1922. This generated an enormous amount of interest and the world went crazy for all things with an ancient Egyptian theme.
