This exquisite Victorian Whitby Jet brooch showcases a magnificent hand-carved high relief rose design, making it a truly beautiful and one-of-a-kind antique piece. The intricate detailing of the carving is stunning, perfectly complemented by the glossy jet. The brooch is secured with an early C catch, and the pin extends well beyond the catch – a characteristic commonly found in Victorian jewellery to accommodate the thicker fabrics of that era. Its timeless elegance and craftsmanship make it a remarkable addition to any collection.
Please note that there is a hairline crack on the reverse side of the brooch, which is visible in the penultimate photo. However, it is important to emphasize that this does not diminish the immense charm of this piece in any way, which is in wonderful condition for its considerable age.
Mourning brooches became very popular following Prince Albert’s death in 1861. During this period and long afterwards, black jewellery was the height of fashion, and not just for those in mourning.
